George Vitanovec, US Army
WWII Army Veteran, George Vitanovec of Swoyersville, PA. George celebrated his 103rd birthday on 15 SEP 2021. He was awarded his quilt at a small presentation by the Northeast PA Quilts of Valor. He enlisted on February 19, 1942, served as a member of the 167th Infantry 31st Division, and was honorably discharged on December 20, 1945.

Thomas G, “This is for him…”
Thomas G., USAF Ret, who served as a fighter pilot in Vietnam, said he was accepting the quilt in honor of his best friend, Capt. John Bush. Capt. Bush was shot down in Vietnam and is still considered Missing In Action. “For those of you who know me, I’m normally not at a loss for words, but not today,” Gates said. “The true heroes are the 56,000 or so who didn’t make it. The rest of us were lucky. That was a very sad day for me and this is for him.”

VCARE 2019 Award Ceremony
Award Ceremony of 20 USF College of Nursing Veterans. The Veterans are part of the V-CARE cohort and were awarded the quilts as gratitude for their military service. Many of the V-CARE graduates return to active duty after graduation as nurses on the front lines.
