TIPS FOR COACHES
Hurrah, you’ve volunteered to take a Rookie under your wing! Here are suggestions for successful UOW sewing days:
-
Ahead of time, familiarize yourself with the instructions and fabrics for your Coach/Rookie Quilt of Valor. Even a simple pattern can stump you momentarily.
- Ahead of time, cut out everything (yes, the entire quilt) so your Rookie can start sewing the moment she passes the 1/4” seam test (see below). Having everything cut out will enable you to concentrate on your Rookie rather than on cutting.
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before your Rookie. Set up everything. Your Rookie will relax when welcomed by a station that is ready. Have chocolate in plain view.
- Before your Rookie arrives, thread your machine and sew a scrap to make sure your machine is happy.
- Your Rookie will be nervous because YOU are an accomplished quilter. Put your Rookie at ease with warmth and friendliness (and chocolate).
- Give your Rookie a 15-minute (mandatory!) break in the morning and in the afternoon. She/he may need a break but be hesitant to take it.
